Hi, I'm a Japanese and I just happened to find this page. The change of Trinity Church was one of the most impressive event to me. I lived in Manhattan in 1988 and 1989, and when I visited later in 1997, it was changed. Because the church was the most impressive church when I visited in NY for the first time, back in 1987, mainly because of its color, which was black, I was so surprised! It'd become a completely different church. I was so shocked that I asked to a hot dog seller on the street why and he said, "they cleaned it up!" It was an another shock! So, you say that the church was just dirty? It was so beautiful in black. I visited NY in March, after 15 years, and didn't forget to go see the church again but I still miss THE church. Thank you so much for sharing photos which makes an evidence the church was really black.

This is awesome work!! Not only is the quality of work you put in excellent, you got the sunlight just right and angles perfect and even more impressive is the background research that has gone into each picture. Seeing the city in its different faces over the years was very nice. What I appreciate the most is that you have not taken the commercial route and filled your pages with irritating ads and really kept your hobby as a hobby unlike most other people nowadays who run to ads the second they start getting hits on their blogs or pages.
Thanks
Agniva.

Nice job. It's really scary how things have changed for the worst. They try and force us to live together but it just ends up displacing the poor and middle class working people into the suburbs. There is an energy in all of the boroughs (maybe not Staten Island hehe) that should not be limited to the rich. Funny thing is that the rich people move to New York City thinking they will feel that same energy and liveliness but instead end up living with the same boring suburban rats they ran from. Now in our I-Society, you just can't feel the same feeling as you did before. It's a shame really.

I believe your smoke house could have been on East 4th, between 1rst and Avenue A. I found Michael Makarchuk's WW2 draft registration record from 1942 and he is owning a restaurant at 175 East 4th. I can email it to you. Village View Projects are there now. Kudos for your excellent research

I just want to thank you for posting these. I've seen Cushman's shot before but never quite knew where some of the exact locations are since it looks so drastically different nowadays. Turns out one of the the shots happen to be on a street on grew up on. I would never have known without your "now" pics as the buildings in Cushman's pics are completely gone and housing projects are in it's place. My parent still live in the area to this day and they moved in right when the newer buildings were completed. Thanks again and I've enjoyed the little bit of history included with each post.
